Apprenticeship and Entrepreneurship

Some careers are skilled trades (cosmetology, woodworking, etc.). These often require apprenticeships rather than traditional schooling.

How to Start an Apprenticeship

  1. Gather Information
  2. Find a mentor or employer sponsor
  3. Register for an Apprenticeship (via Skilled Trades Ontario) skilledtradesontario.ca
  4. Complete required work hours + in-school training
  5. Obtain a Certificate of Apprenticeship
  6. Write your licensing exam (for compulsory trades)

Entrepreneurship

  1. Decide on your business idea
  2. Create a business plan
  3. Register your business with Ontario: Ontario Business Registration
  4. Check if you need special licenses
  5. Open business banking accounts
  6. Use social media (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook) for marketing
  7. Additional important steps:
    • Check municipal licensing requirements
    • Register for CRA accounts (if needed): Canada Revenue Agency
    • Consider business insurance
Obtain Insurance: Insurance is something you pay monthly or annually (every year). If your business ever has a crisis such as a major accident or loss, insurance helps you pay for the damage. This is not always required, but it is a major help in times of need.
